GDC Purmandal Organizes An Extension Lecture On NDPS Act

NSS Unit in collaboration with Nash Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Committee and Red- Ribbon Club of the college organized an extension lecture on NDPS Act, 1985 and Amendments thereof. The objective of the lecture is to raise awareness among youth in order to prohibits a person from producing, possessing, selling, purchasing , transporting, storing and consuming any Narcotic drug or psychotropic substance. The extension lecture was delivered by Prof. Mohammad Rafi [HOD Political Science]. The resource person extensively talked on Drug Menace, its ill effects, objectives and punishments provided under the Act. Narcotic drugs include Opium, Heroine, Codeine, Cocaine, Morphine etc. Examples of psychotropic substances was also illustrated to the students. A psychotropic substance is a drug that affects how the brain works and causes changes in mood, thoughts, feelings or behaviour. Examples being : Consumption of Alcohol, Caffeine, Nicotine, Marijuana and certain painkiller medicines. Punishments under the Act for persons found guilty of these offences will be rigorous imprisonment of atleast 10 years and in some cases forfeiture of property. The Act also provide death penality in rare cases where a person is a repeat offend. Information regarding Narcotics Control Bureau which was constituted in 1986 under the Act was also shared with the students. Objectives and initiatives to tackle to drug addiction was also elaborated. First and foremost objectives of the Act is to help victims of drug abuse to come out of addiction. Initiatives included establishment of Narco Coordination Centre [ NCORD] in 2016 through which financial assistance to states for Narcotics control was revived. The whole programme was conducted under the patronage of Principal of the college Prof. [Dr.] Raj Shree Dhar. The organizing team included Prof. Lakshmi Sohan [convener NMBA committee], Prof. Shahima Akhter [Nodal Officer RRC], Prof. Deepika Mehra [ Convener Literary Committee] and Prof. Mohammad Rafi [ NSS PO].
